I am helping someone to set up a garden on the oregon coast. I have no experience with gardening in sandy soils but know that there are serious problems with water and lack of nutrients in the soil. I was surprised with how many vegetables that grow on the coast. http://coastexplorermagazine.com/features/665-great-veggies-for-coastal-gardens This seems like the perfect environment for year round salads and great stew vegetables.
There are also a large number of other plants that grow well. http://www.garlandnursery.com/oregon_coast_plants.html Though many of the plants have spines, there are some surprising ones in the list. Not to mention all the herbs that would grow well.
