All the Gods are Dead

Perhaps the world was created by some kind of sentient being, but I believe that being left or died long ago.  The time of the gods has long since passed.  We have entered the time of alleged reason.  Just as not everyone fallowed the gods, not everyone fallows reason.  Some people were able to hide their beliefs easier during the time of the gods.  The only real difference in the people is that no one fears death for not going along with the main stream culture.  They only fear not being able to make enough money to live off of.  Where as, in the past they would have been burned at the steak for not making some kind of devout pledge to some kind of god.  Of course each culture had their own god and killed everyone else for not making that pledge to their god.
Yet somehow there appears to have been a new god created.  Money has been raised to the value of some kind of god.  So much of the day is focused on gaining or using money.  Most people work very hard to receive small pieces of paper which they believe will give them everything they need.  Different rituals and sacrifices are completed just to receive more of the substance.  Just as each culture had its own god, there are many different types of currency.  Some kinds are considered better than others depending upon where you are in the world, and what is desired for purchase.  The currency is rarely backed or represented by anything.  Before, the pieces of paper were worth gold or silver.  Now the value of the currency is just taken on faith.  Just as people believe the currency has some kind of value, they also believe currency can be transferred electronically.  For example, one person may buy groceries by transferring funds electronically, but does that money have any actual value above that which the people decided it to have.
This does not make currency a god, but people have raised the value of currency to that of a god.  Perhaps the gods infused themselves into the currency circulating around.  For lack of anyone seriously worshiping them, and being half starved for attention, they decided instead of fighting for worshipers again, but to just go with the flow.  Gain energy form where it is readily supplied.  Maybe this is why finding unknown currency in the pockets of clothing is such a big deal.
